If anyone was affected by AVG’s bad update yesterday where the system gets stuck in an infinite loop, ignore AVG’s needlessly complicated fix. Just boot into repair with a command prompt and rename C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\avgrs*.exe and C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\avgchsv*.exe. To get to the command prompt, hit F8 as Windows begins to boot and choose Startup Repair -> Command prompt. These files will disable AVG’s resident shield and allow Windows to boot. Afterwards, boot into Windows and repair the installation of AVG. Problem solved.
