The VoR and the Android Market

The Voice of Reason on the Android Market

As some of you may know, the Android market is now open and browsable from the web at http://market.android.com. This is exciting because what was once proprietary to only Android users is now viewable by all!

Which brings me to the next point – Did you know that the VoR has it’s own Android application? That’s right. You can browse all the great iPhone articles, tutorials, medicine and political posts right from your Android tablet or phone. And the best part is, it’s free and always will be!

How to Stream Movies from your Mac/PC to your iPad or iPhone

The thing about the iPad is that it’s an amazing device… if you know how to take advantage of it. For example, I was chatting with an attending at the hospital about the iPad and he said he thought it “sucked” because he was unable to do some things he wanted with it. It turned out he just didn’t know how and, after explaining the functions, he couldn’t be happier with it.

Apart from the incredible medical software available for the iPad, one of the other remarkable features of the iPad is all the available video and entertainment software. Apple’s advertising goes something along the lines of “you get one device and 200,000 possibilities” (or maybe I just thought that, I don’t know). One of those possibilities is to open your iPad up to streaming video. That’s right – movies that resides on your computer can be watched on your iPad without needed to copy anything to your device and use up space. Now that you know where we’re going in this article, let me introduce you to Air Video. Continue reading

AVG 2011 infinite loop bug on 64-bit Windows

AVG Anti-virusIf anyone was affected by AVG’s bad update yesterday where the system gets stuck in an infinite loop, ignore AVG’s needlessly complicated fix. Just boot into repair with a command prompt and rename C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\avgrs*.exe and C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\avgchsv*.exe. To get to the command prompt, hit F8 as Windows begins to boot and choose Startup Repair -> Command prompt. These files will disable AVG’s resident shield and allow Windows to boot. Afterwards, boot into Windows and repair the installation of AVG. Problem solved.

14 must-have jailbreak-only tweaks for the iPhone

While most people associate “forbidden” applications with jailbreaking, there are also a number of great tweaks in Cydia that will improve the way the iPhone works and how you can use it. These tweaks often change the way existing applications work and add useful features. In fact, one cannot help but wonder why Apple didn’t include some of these in the stock iOS.

Regardless, here is a list of 14 of some of the best tweaks available in Cydia: Continue reading

Review of Brain Tutor HD for the Apple iPad

I have reviewed this iPhone medical application for iMedicalApps.com.

The full review can be read below on this site or here at iMedicalApps: http://www.imedicalapps.com/2010/11/brain-tutor-hd-makes-learning-brain-anatomy-approachable-by-combining-3-dimensional-and-cross-sectional-views-of-the-brain-ipad/

Brain Tutor HD for the Apple iPad

By Brian Wells, MS-3, MSM, MPH

Few areas of medical science remain as wondrous and mysterious as that of neurology. Indeed, I remember not so long ago sitting in a study hall with a book on neuroanatomy and a collection of class notes and pages printed from various sites on the Internet, often staring off into the field outside the study hall as I tried to visualize in three dimensions the two dimensional diagrams about which I was learning. Of course, there were models of the brain and numerous MRIs and CTs to examine but nothing which elegantly combined the information with the images, transforming 2D slice to 3D realism. This is the goal which Brain Tutor HD seeks to achieve. Continue reading

Try iPhone apps before you buy them? Sure… if you’re jailbroken with Installous

DISCLAIMER: Installous should not be used for piracy and this article in no way advocates such acts. Installous should be used as a “try before you buy” system so that you can decide if you like an application before spending money on it. If a Lite version is available, that version should be used rather than Installous.

That said…

$0.99 here, $1.99 there… oh, look at that game! Only $4.99!… (15 minutes later)…. Wow! What a waste of money!

Typically, that’s how Apple’s App Store works. Now, let’s talk about what has become a great alternative to hoping your hard-earned money isn’t wasted: Installous. Continue reading

The Art of Medicine – Shifting the Paradigm

“Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex. It takes genius and a lot of courage to move in opposite direction.” – Albert Einstein

The problem with many is not that they’re ignorant, it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so and haven’t experienced a new and better way of working.

For many years, I was like a prisoner. Blindfolded. Restrained. Blindly following the prevailing dogma of how a physician should act, what a physician should carry and how a physician should study. In time, I have had a breakthrough. An epiphany. It has become clear to me that one of our the greatest hindrances is that of uninspired knowledge, that of an approach solidly grounded in a pre-data driven era. An approach with a basis in pride.

Pride is a weapon. Pride pushes people in a direction, to act for good or to act for self-interest. Who would not feel good when prompted on rounds by an off-the-wall question to be able to respond correctly? It serves self-esteem. It serves ego. It serves pride. However, we must not forget that pride can also push us in the wrong direction. For every 10 things known, there are likely a dozen or more other things not known and in that fact lies the humility that must remain at all times with even the best physicians. Continue reading
