The iPad 2 jailbreak – How necessary is it?

I think anyone would be hard pressed to claim that the iPad 2 is not a solid tablet. I’ve had mine for a few weeks now and I find it noticeably faster and better than the original iPad. However, one thing the iPad 2 lacks is a jailbreak. Sure, all the big hackers are working on the jailbreak but so far no one has succeeded.

Guide to Jailbreaking your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad/Apple TV

iOS Jailbreaking is a process that allows devices running Apple’s iOS operating system (e.g. iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, and recently Apple TV) to gain full access (root access) to all features of the said operating system, thereby removing limitations imposed by Apple. Once jailbroken, iOS users are able to download additional applications, extensions and themes that are unavailable through the official App Store, via installers such as Cydia, one of a number of current means for older iPhones. A jailbroken iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch running iOS can still use the App Store and iTunes and other normal functions, such as making telephone calls.

Below is a consolidated list of every iOS device and the jailbreaking tool required for nearly every version of the firmware. To simplify the process, I recommend upgrading your device to the newest iOS version supported by the jailbreak prior to performing the jailbreak. For now (3/20/2011), stay away from version 4.3 as the jailbreak is not yet ready for release (with the exception of the Apple TV). Continue reading
