iPhone Jailbreak App MobileNotifier Embarrasses Apple’s Notifications

MobileNotifier for jailbroken iPhone

Notifications on iOS are one of the operating system’s weakpoints. Peter Hajas’ MobileNotifier hack finally brings them into the modern era.

If you’re like me, you get very tired of having a Twitter or e-mail alert pop up in the middle of what you’re doing and forcing you to respond. Even worse, pulling your iDevice off the nightstand in the morning to be greeted by a stack of alerts which can only be viewed in order, and dismissed one by one. MobileNotifier is an jailbreak hack for the iPhone and iPod Touch that is so good, it should have come from Apple. Guide to Jailbreaking your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad/Apple TV

iOS Jailbreaking is a process that allows devices running Apple’s iOS operating system (e.g. iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, and recently Apple TV) to gain full access (root access) to all features of the said operating system, thereby removing limitations imposed by Apple. Once jailbroken, iOS users are able to download additional applications, extensions and themes that are unavailable through the official App Store, via installers such as Cydia, one of a number of current means for older iPhones. A jailbroken iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch running iOS can still use the App Store and iTunes and other normal functions, such as making telephone calls.

Below is a consolidated list of every iOS device and the jailbreaking tool required for nearly every version of the firmware. To simplify the process, I recommend upgrading your device to the newest iOS version supported by the jailbreak prior to performing the jailbreak. For now (3/20/2011), stay away from version 4.3 as the jailbreak is not yet ready for release (with the exception of the Apple TV). Continue reading
